Health Informatics is a field that focuses on the technology-mediated use of information and knowledge to improve health care. Informatics extends beyond simply using the computer as a tool for computation into the process of knowledge acquisition, storage, retrieval, representation, and manipulation into areas that seek to understand, assess and organize knowledge systems. Health Informatics encompasses the fields of information science, computer information systems, and educational technology in support of health care delivery, education, and management.
The charge to the new Health Informatics organization at UCHC is to support the development of educational information systems and improve student learning and knowledge outcomes by providing instructional technology and e-learning services to faculty and students in support of the missions of the Health Center.
Biomedical and Media Communications (BMC)
The Biomedical and Media Communications Department provides a wide range of video, interactive multimedia, and video teleconferencing production services to health care and education professionals at UConn Health Center.
BMC is a full production department specializing in broadcast grade video production, digital photography, designing interactive CD-ROMs and DVDs, video teleconferencing and distance education, live and archived on-demand video web streaming, auditorium design and classroom support, and a full array of graphic design and illustration services including medical illustration, posters, signage and framing.
Library & Computer Education Center (CEC)
The Lyman Maynard Stowe Library is your source for electronic journals, books, and databases - and the staff to help you use them. Recently renovated, it's also a great place to study. Try our new 24/7 Shafer study rooms. The CEC offers students technical support for laptops and PDAs, Blackboard support, and a self-study area with educational software and printing. It also includes a new Educational Technology Lab faculty and students can use for educational multimedia projects. Three classrooms are also located in the CEC.
Faculty Instructional Technology Services (FITS)
FITS mission is to provide technological support, expertise and to facilitate faculty initiated educational innovations. Our mission comprehends support of faculty customers of diverse levels of expertise, providing services appropriate for their goals, and technical proficiency. At this point, we have recognized three action domains: Blackboard, E-Learning Methodologies, and Digitization.
